Wheelchair Lifts for Handicapped Vans

Sometimes referred to as a ‘platform lift’ or ‘vertical platform lift’, wheelchair lifts are mechanical platforms designed to raise and lower in order to allow individuals with wheelchairs to enter and exit a vehicle with ease.

At Van Products, we offer several different styles of wheelchair lifts to meet the unique mobility needs that you or your loved one may have. Contact us today to learn more.

Characteristics of Wheelchair Lifts

Wheelchair lifts can be characterized by the following two mechanisms:

#1 - A Crane

Some wheelchair lifts operate by using a crane mechanism. This feature is ideal for those wheelchair users who have some mobility and are able to get out of their chair on their own.

The crane mechanism allows a wheelchair user to:

  • Wheel up to the vehicle
  • Stand up, out of the wheelchair
  • Get 'crane' mechanism to lift the wheelchair
  • Swing the wheelchair into the vehicle interior, storing it securely - allowing the person to get into the vehicle

#2-A platform

The other type of wheelchair lift feature is the platform mechanism. Wheelchair lifts that have platforms are ideal for those wheelchair users who are unable to walk on their own.

The platform allows a handicapped individual to:

  • Roll up to a vehicle
  • Lower the platform
  • Roll onto the platform
  • Lock the wheelchair into a stationary position on the platform (with the wheelchair user in place)
  • Lift the platform with the person in the wheelchair up to the entry level of vehicle,

The wheelchair can also be unlocked so that the individual in wheelchair can roll INTO the interior of a vehicle.
