What is a winch?

For those who aren’t familiar, a winch is a type of towing tool/device that is often used in rescue situations. The winch uses a winding component to pull (wind up) or let out (wind out) the tension that is in the cable.

This often proves helpful when towing a vehicle out of deep sand, for example.
